The following was read as an introduction at the 2026 LMU Faculty Awards and Recognition Ceremony:
The Rains Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative works celebrates a Loyola Marymount University faculty member whose exceptional research and creative achievements reflect a deep commitment to scholarly rigor and embody LMU’s mission in a significant and impactful way. The recipient of the 2026 award is Dr. Jonas Mureika, a prolific and internationally recognized scholar whose work has made significant contributions to particle physics, quantum gravity, and cosmology. Since joining LMU in 2004, he has authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, delivered numerous invited lectures and conference presentations, and built a global network of collaborators spanning multiple continents. His research explores fundamental questions about the structure of the universe, including the relationship between relativity and quantum mechanics, with influential publications appearing in leading journals and generating significant attention within the scientific community. Jonas’s scholarship also extends beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. His interdisciplinary work includes widely used computational models that analyze aerodynamic effects in track and field sprint events—tools used by researchers, coaches, and athletes worldwide. His work has been featured in national and international media, reflecting the broad reach of his scholarship. In addition to his research accomplishments, Jonas is deeply committed to mentoring undergraduate researchers, guiding approximately 30 LMU students in significant research projects that have resulted in conference presentations, publications, and successful careers in physics.
